The special charism of the Maryknoll Sisters is “transcultural mission” or bringing the Good News of our Christian faith to peoples in cultures and countries different from our own, and recognizing the presence of God’s life among peoples of different faiths and beliefs.
For us, mission is a way of life. Wherever we are, we try to bring God’s love and care to people, and to discover how God is present in the different cultures and beliefs. In whatever we do, we try to bulid the Kingdom of God in earth, in our world and time by helping people to have more fullness of life.
The Maryknoll Sisters were founded in the United States in 1912. Our founderess is Mother Mary Joseph Rogers. She helped members to nurture their faith, their own personalities and gifts and to build a joyful and lively family spirit in community. She told us that to be effective missioners we must live a spirituality that makes us contemplatives who express our relationship with God in active ministries of loving service among peoples of other cultures.
Women from any country were welcomed if they showed evidence of a vocation to our way of life in transcultural mission. At present, Maryknoll Sisters come from 22 different countries and are presently working in 33 countries.
Our Priorities are to be ministries that promote reconciliation, justice and peace that increase people’s understanding for and protection of God’s creation, especially our earth and its inhabitants; to work with the poor and oppressed, especially women, so they may have a full human life; to work with peoples of other faiths to mutually discover God’s life and work together for better life for all.
